MIAMI, Fla. (November 14, 2019) —
Another day, another new signing for Club Internacional. Today, Inter Miami CF announced the acquisition of 23-year-old centre-back Grant Lillard from the Chicago Fire in exchange for $75,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). Lillard had options on his contract for 2020 and 2021, but the Fire had not picked up the 2020 option yet.
“Grant is a promising young defender,” said Paul McDonough, Inter Miami CF’s sporting director. “We are in the midst of building our team and adding key pieces to complement our supplemental roster.”
Lillard signed a Homegrown Player contract with the Chicago Fire in January 2018. He made 14 appearances for the senior squad over two seasons. He made just two starts and four appearances in total last season, and the Fire have three other centrebacks ahead of him on the roster, Francisco Calvo, Johan Kappelhof and Marcelo.
Prior to joining the Fire, Lillard studied and played NCAA Division I soccer at Indiana University. In four years at the university, he played and started a total of 86 matches. He also scored 14 goals and registered nine assists for the Hoosiers. As a senior, he was named a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist, First Team All-America by United Soccer Coaches, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Big Ten.
Lillard brings the Inter Miami roster to eight players. For more statistics on Grant:
