Inter Miami To Field USL One Club

MIAMI, Fla. (October 9, 2019) —

Inter Miami CF will launch a USL League One team adding depth to its development structure ahead of its Major League Soccer debut in 2020.

League One is one of the three leagues that make up the United Soccer Leagues (“USL”). It serves as the 3rd division of U.S. Soccer. USL brings high-level competitive soccer to more than 100 markets in the United States.

Inter Miami’s League One side will be a professional team that bridges the gap between the First Team and the Academy. The yet-to-be-named League One team will train alongside the First Team and Academy teams at the new 64-acre Inter Miami Training Complex and Fort Lauderdale Stadium, which we will refer to collectively as the “Centro Deportivo.” It will feature a 50,000 square-foot training complex with seven fields, in addition to the 18,000-capacity stadium that will serve as the permanent home of the USL One side as well as the temporary home of the First Team until such time as Miami Freedom Park comes online.

“We are proud to close this deal and join a competitive league where our youth players can compete against quality opponents,” said Paul McDonough, the sporting director for Inter Miami CF. “USL League One will provide more opportunities for players from South Florida as well as elite international prospects.”

The 2020 League One schedule was recently released and is available here.

For the 2020 season, League One will also have two other expansion teams join the existing ten teams, in addition to the Inter Miami squad. Union Omaha SC and the New England Revolution will also enter the league.

“We’re thrilled to have Inter Miami CF join League One,” said USL Senior Vice President Steven Short. “It’s exciting to watch our league as it continues to grow in both size and intensity and we’re already looking forward to our second year of competition. We know that this club will be a tremendous addition.”

What should the Inter Miami CF League One Team have as a name and brand? Should it be something along the lines of Deportivo Broward? Club de Fútbol Fort Lauderdale (CFFL)? Or more bland/boring like Inter Miami 2?
