Martinez, who is 25, is from Cartagena de los Indios, Colombia. He has already featured on four continents to date in his career: South amd North America, Europe and Asia. As a member of Colombia’s national team, he played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the 2016 Copa America Centenario in the United States and the 2019 Copa America. The 5-foot-9 (1.80 m) striker has 18 overall appearances for the Colombian national team, including three at the 2018 World Cup and three at the 2019 Copa America in Brazil, where he scored once.

Martínez began at the famous Racing Club de Avellaneda (better known simply as “Racing”), where he spent time on loan to fellow Argentine sides Santamarina and Aldosivi. In 2016 he was transferred to Chinese club Jiangsu Suning for a fee reported to be $10.15 million. Jiangsu Suning loaned Martínez to LaLiga side Villarreal during the winter transfer window in 2018. He saw limited playing time with the Yellow Submarine, featuring in only eight games in 2018. Villarreal purchased his rights outright for roughly $16.99 million at the end of the loan spell, but immediately transferred him to Club América. The fee was reported at around $10 million.

After making the permanent move to Club America that year, Martínez has been a regular for Miguel Herrera at the Liga MX giants, winning a Liga MX title and Copa MX title each season.

In the 2018 season with Los Azulcremas, Martinez scored 15 goals and added three assists in 43 games across all competitions. He had two goals and six assists in 21 league appearances this year.

Inter Miami currently have one Designated Player under contract, Argentine midfielder Matias Pellegrini. They had reportedly tried to negotiate a transfer of Argentine forward Sebastián Driussi from Zenit St. Petersburg but without success. In the absence of landing Driussi, it is thought that Martínez has become the prime option for a centre forward.
