MIAMI, Fla. (January 30, 2020) —
On Wednesday night Inter Miami traded goalkeeper Bryan Meredith to Vancouver for a fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft.
Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said six more players will be signed to complete the roster, including two long-awaited Designated Players.
The three remaining keepers going into the season are Luis Robles, John McCarthy and Drake Callender, in that order.
The nine-year professional, who has spent eight combined seasons with Seattle Sounders FC and San Jose Earthquakes before being selected by Miami in the 2019 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft, joins Vancouver in exchange for the ’Caps natural fourth-round selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. Meredith has also played with Swedish Superettan side IK Brage and North American Soccer League club New York Cosmos in 2013. Overall, he has 50 starts in 52 career professional appearances.
“I’m excited to join Whitecaps FC and look forward to helping the club as we enter a new season.”Bryan Meredith
Meredith will join his new teammates in Southern California this week as the ‘Caps continue their preseason camp. The 30-year old native of Scotch Plains, New Jersey is the third goalkeeper on the ‘Caps roster, along with 2019 VWFC Player of the Year Maxime Crépeau and 20-year old BMO Academy System product Thomas Hasal.
Inter Miami plays its first-ever regular season game on March 1, 2020, when they take on Los Angeles Football Club at the Banc of Califormia Stadium. Vancouver kicks off the 2020 MLS season in one month on Saturday, February 29 when they host Sporting Kansas City at BC Place.
“We are happy to welcome Bryan to the club,” said Whitecaps FC sporting director Axel Schuster. “He will bring additional experience and leadership to the group both on and off the pitch.”
No reason was given for why Miami would trade Meredith after using one of its expansion draft choices to select him. However, it may have been with the intent to make a trade all along. Or, it could be that the team was satisfied with how John McCarthy and Drake Callender have looked.
