MIAMI, Fla. (March 12, 2020) —
Amid worldwide concern for the spreading COVID-19 (corona virus), and after the National Basketball Association and Soccer Leagues in Europe suspended their seasons, MLS followed suit.
The league announced a 30 day suspension of all games to combat the spread of the highly contagious virus. Cases have been reported throughout the United States, and, due to a lack of testing availability, and efforts by the Federal government to downplay the severity of the outbreak, it is likely that the virus is much more prevalent than reported.
MLS took the correct course of action in this regard. The league’s official statement is below:
On the local scene, Inter Miami CF held a press conference at their Fort Lauderdale facilities today to talk with the media. Jorge Mas, managing co-owner of the club, answered questions about the players, ticketing, and other similar questions in English and Spanish. He said he had just informed the players, and that they were disappointed since they were looking forward to playing in front of home fans for the first time. “We will continue training and practicing,” Mas reassured reporters. “There will be no change in our routine, except to limit access to players and the training.”

It is unknown on what date the MLS season will resume. Mas said today that the league believes it is still possible for each team to play a full 34-game schedule, given that the delay has occured early in the season.
Mas also stressed that this is not a cancellation, and that tickets already purchased will be valid once the new dates of games are determined. He said “there is tremendous anticipation for our first game.”
The continuing spread of the virus has led to the cancellation of many major events, including most major sporting events, including the NCAA mens’s and women’s basketball tournaments. In Europe, UEFA is expected to cancel the Euro 2020 torunament until possibly next year, while the UEFA Champions League and Europa League are likley to be officially suspended at an upcoming meeting on Tuesday.
Updates will be provided as they occur here on Russo Soccer.
