MLS Disney calendar released | League tweaks qualification for knockout phase

MIAMI, Fla. — (June 28, 2020) Major League Soccer released its Disney tournament schedule, as well as unveiling a rule change that could benefit Orlando City, Inter Miami and teams in Group A.

The tournament features 54 matches spanning 33 days and will be played at ESPN Wide World of Sports on Disney World property. Teams began reporting to Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort last Wednesday and will play matches from July 8.

The tournament will begin with a group stage, with all 26 teams divided into six pools. The Lions are the top seed in Group A, which has six teams while all other pools have four.

Despite the fact that Group A has six teams, MLS originally announced only the top two teams could advance from each of the groups, with the four thrid-place teams with the most points earning a bid to the next round.

This would have meant Inter Miami, Orlando City and the other four teams in its pool were statistically less likely to advance. The change corrects this error in judgment on the part of MLS’ games-makers and levels the playing field.

Inter Miami and Orlando City will kick off the tournament at 8 p.m. on July 8. The match will air on ESPN.

Why the Inter Miami-Orlando City match is not a clásico.

Some media are trying to classify the Inter Miami-Orlando City match as a “clásico”, however, that tag does not apply here. For starters, the two teams have no history playing each other and neither has any historical track record of sustained success that would justify such a lofty designation, which is reserved for the very top matches in leagues around the world. Secondly, “clásicos” are established over time; they cannot be manufactured. Nevertheless, it is a match pitting the two MLS sides located in Florida, which will generate interest on a regional level. Sorry, but becoming a “clásico” will have to be done the old-fashioned way- it has to be earned.

Fans are of course not allowed to attend the tournament. MLS, which is being carried out with strict restrictions and extensive testing in an effort to protect players and staff from exposure to COVID-19.
