The commercial director of FC Barcelona, Xavier Asensi, has stepped down

Xavier Asensi, the commercial director of FC Barcelona, has communicated his resignation to the club, according to a report in Spanish media Cadena COPE.

The Blaugrana executive said that he wished to pursue new professional projects. Asensi arrived at Barcelona in October of 2010 with his mission being to further the commercial ambitions of the club. In 2011, he assumed a new goal of the club to open its first commercial office outside of Catalonia, in Hong Kong. In summer of 2018, he was named Barça Chief Commercial Officer, in charge of all of its international offices in the areas of Partnerships, commercial ventures and installations, Global Business Development, as well as the Barça Academy programs which take place in various locations arond the globe.

Asensi was also in charge of, working alongside Jordi Cardoner, identifying a sponsor for the naming rights to the Estadio Camp Nou. The concept of selling the naming rights to the famous stadium is an important component of the multimillion euro project, known as the Espai Barça project, which will completely transform and enlarge the famous stadium. That project has been delayed, in part due to COVID-19 and partially due to the tremendous cost, and is not expected to be completed before 2025.

Asensi became a figure in the “Barçagate”scandal. He was a member of the commcercial department (at the time called “Àrea de Negoci Global”) Asensi refused to accept the invoices submitted by I3 Ventures, a company that claimed to have been contracted by Barcelona directors, on the grounds that he did not recognise who had contracted the company’s services.

The stated mission of I3 Ventures was to monitor the social media networks of Barcelona; however, it was accused of creating social media accounts in order to praise and elevate the profile of ex-president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the board of directors, while criticising other people in the club, among them Leo Messi and Gerard Piqué.
