Quarter Finals of Copa del Rey set for this week

MIAMI (1 Feb. 2021) The quarterfinal draw for the Copa del Rey took place on Friday morning after the Round of 16 was completed earlier last week.

The marquée matchup of the quarterfinals has to be Wednesday evening’s match at the Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes in Granada, as the Nazarí squad faces the Blaugrana. Granada CF reached the semi-finals of the 2020 Copa (still waiting for the final to be played between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club Bilbao). Barcelona advanced after complicated wins over Rayo Vallecano and Cornellà de Llobregat in previous rounds.

Real Betis Balompié will be home against last season’s finalists Athletic Club Bilbao at the Eatadio Benito Villamarin in Seville, while Levante will host Villarreal.

The remaining quarterfinal matchup will be an all Andalusian affair when Sevilla FC – always among the favourites in cup tournaments – travel east to face Almería, who narrowly missed promotion to La Liga this season and are again in the promotion race in the Seguna this year. Almería has already eliminated two La Liga opponents (Deportivo Alavés and Osasuna) and will be looking to provide an upset.

So which side will lift his majesty’s trophy? Among the eight finalists, realistically any side has a pathway to the Cup. Barcelona would have to be considered the favourite, with Sevilla second-favourite. However, the Copa del Rey tournament has seen its share of upsets, with both Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid already eliminated. In fact, Zidane’s Merengues suffered an historic humiliation, falling to third division club Alcoyano, who played with 10 men after a red card and who had a 41-year-old goalkeeper.

The games take place between Tuesday 2 February and Thursday 4 February. The semi-finals will be played over two legs, to be staged on 9-10 February and 2-3 March.
