Match #2: Phila. Union 1 – Inter Miami 2
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 26, 2021) — Nevermind that the game was actually in Chester, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. The city of brotherly love was the obvious location for the Higuaín brothers, Gonzalo (“Pipita”) and Federico to shine, and that they did. The goals by Federico, 36, and Gonzalo, 33, marked the first time in MLS history that a pair of brothers have scored in the same game.
With the brothers’ goals and strong team play, Inter Miami earned a well-deserved victory over Philadelphia Union 2-1.
In minute 73 MLS-veteran Federico Higuaín played an arcing ball from a set-piece into the area where his younger brother Gonzalo side-netted a header from point-blank range to draw Internacional level.
Less than 10 minutes later, Federico scored off a Nico Figal assist from the center of the area inside the post to put them ahead 2-1. Philadelphia had opened the scoring in the 53rd on a slowly rolling pass from Kaçper Przybylko into Inter Miami’s box, where Jamiro Monteiro pounded the ball behind John McCarthy as the Inter Miami defenders did not provide clearance.
The win was Inter Miami’s first of the season, following their opening day loss in Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2. Inter now has a win and a loss on the season.
Federico’s score was his first goal since July 2020 when he played for D.C. United, with his assist on Saturday being his first since the 2019 season when he played for the Columbus Crew.
“This is only the start of the journey for us,” said Inter Miami manager Phil Neville after the match. “We know we’ve got miles more to give. I believe there’s another 20-30 percent to come from us.”
