Preview
River have won the Copa Libertadores four times and were 2019 runners-up. They are in form, having destroyed Nacional Montevideo with a thumping 8-2 aggregate victory in the quarter final. Thus, they are favourites in this round. River look to extend their 13-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (W10, D3), a run that saw both teams score during the second half in the previous four fixtures.
A perfect five-game record at home in the Copa Libertadores this season (W5), which includes four clean sheets, will be a morale booster for River Plate. They also have a four-game unbeaten home run versus Brazillian clubs in this tournament (W2, D2) in which River Plate scored exactly twice on three occasions. In 2020, River Plate has averaged 2.13 goals per game at home.
One-time Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras had no trouble defeating Libertad Asunción in their quarter final round, 4-1 aggregate. Palmeiras led at HT in both legs. They have won five or six mathces in the tournament when they were ahead at halftime; those five also were won by a 2+ goal winning margin by FT.
However, Palmeiras hasn’t been a good away team, winning just once across their last four competitive away matches (W1, D2, L1), and one win in their last four Copa Libertadores road trips against Argentinian opponents (W1, D1, L2). Palmeiras will hope to score first and extend their impressive record when scoring first away from home in the Libertadores – 11 away wins in this tournament.
Players to watchRafael Borré scored second-half hat-trick in River Plate’s last Copa Libertadores match, and scored late on in the Superclásico last time out. Palmeiras will need a good match from Luiz Adriano, as the former AC Milan man scored the opening goal in their last two matches.
Seeing Red: There’s been four red cards shown across River Plate’s last four matches.

2019
